For the Supplica there is no first step beyond praying it at noon on 8 May or the first Sunday of October; for any confraternity membership the real first step is telephoning the shrine's Segreteria Generale on +39 081 8577 321 or +39 081 8577 482, because no online enrollment exists.

Pompeii is the great Rosary shrine of Italy, and its best-known devotion is not a membership at all but the Supplica, a long prayer of petition to the Queen of the Holy Rosary written by St Bartolo Longo in 1883. It is recited solemnly at noon on 8 May and on the first Sunday of October, when thousands gather in front of the shrine and millions more join in from New York to Buenos Aires to Sydney. Longo himself called it the Hour of the World. Anyone can simply pray it at noon on those two days, wherever they are, in any of the many languages the shrine publishes, which makes this the easiest of all the Rosary devotions to take part in. The shrine also sends out Marian Missions to parishes around Italy and publishes the magazine Il Rosario e la Nuova Pompei.

Where it comes from

The shrine was built from 1876 onwards by St Bartolo Longo, a lawyer and layman, who also wrote the Supplica in 1883. A historic Confraternita del Santo Rosario was set up by Longo at the church of SS. Salvatore in Pompeii to raise funds for the shrine.

What you promise

None for the Supplica, which is a public prayer open to all. No membership rule was found.

What the Church attaches

Union with a worldwide simultaneous recitation twice a year, and remembrance in the shrine's daily Rosary, which is prayed at the High Altar at 9.30, 15.30 and 18.00. The shrine's own pages do not publish indulgences attached to a confraternity membership, so none should be claimed.
